Project Description |
The Maryborough Station Domain Project is a thoughtful public open space that balances the town's rich history with modern community needs. The overall layout centres around the historic Maryborough Station, incorporating heritage elements with materials, colours and vegetation that complement the station's architectural character. The design included new roads, community performance area, market areas, historic trees, the creation of a pedestrian pathway system and the incorporation of existing buildings (including the Town Offices and radio Station) as well as a lawn croquette club and existing convict-built drainage systems. Central to the design are open spaces that encourage community interaction and social engagement. The performance area which consists of a stage and an amphitheatre, with ample shade serves as a versatile venue for small concerts, outdoor cinema, and community celebrations, accommodating large crowds while maintaining an intimate atmosphere. The design strategically places seating areas and open spaces to facilitate both organized activities and spontaneous gatherings, fostering a sense of community. A key aspect of the project is its waterwise approach, addressing the longstanding drought conditions affecting the region and utilising surface water run off through careful grading as well as improving water quality through raingardens. Indigenous vegetation is used throughout the landscape to enhance visual appeal and ensure sustainability, reducing the need for excessive irrigation. The Maryborough Station Domain Project creates a vibrant, welcoming space for both the local community and tourists, celebrating the town's heritage while embracing sustainable design principles. |
