Outdoor space is not peripheral to education — for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, it is central to it.
This Landscape Masterplan for Banmira Specialist School was developed around a single purpose: enabling students aged 2.8 to 18 years to become the most independent version of themselves, in a safe, natural, and purposefully designed outdoor environment.
Designed in close collaboration with the school's leadership team, the playspaces address a wide spectrum of developmental needs — sensory regulation, physical challenge, cognitive stimulation, and social connection. Natural elements including mounded softfall, shade trees, herb and vegetable gardens, and sensory-friendly textures extend learning beyond the classroom and into the landscape.
The junior playspace supports early development through inclusive swings, nest swings, and shade structures. The middle school area introduces greater physical challenge through climbing structures, a mast activity net, ball play areas, a Yarning Circle, and spaces for both structured and unstructured engagement.
Every element was resolved with supervision, safety, and developmental purpose in mind — creating an outdoor environment where learning, confidence, and community inclusion happen naturally.
