St John's Primary School, Clifton Hill

Project Description

The Sensory Garden area at St Johns Primary School has multiple aims. The main aim was to provide a quiet play area which incorporated sensory aspects as well as productive garden areas and a junior playground area. This would create different play opportunities to the ones which already existed and would also provide spaces for the schools diverse range of students. The playspace design included raised vegetable gardens, fruit trees, sensory planting, a cubby area, mudplay and digging pit area, light/shade screens and a memorial tree. In addition, it included an adjacent junior play area with climbing equipment and softfall. The productive areas and sensory planting was incorporated into the school program, with the students undertaking and planning the replacement planting of seasonal plants. In time the memorial tree will grow and create a living cubby area, which the children can play under.  We also developed a Masterplan for the School redevelopment of the entire playspace area to include a senior play area, large sandpit, and the creation of more natural areas around the school
