A Garden Among the Eucalypts

This landscape design was shaped by the site's natural characteristics, including its gently sloping topography, mature Eucalyptus canopy and expansive rural setting. Delivered over two stages, the project commenced following the installation of a substantial rainwater harvesting system, providing a sustainable water source for the establishment and ongoing irrigation of extensive lawn areas.

While the property contained a number of existing garden beds, much of the original understorey planting had been lost over time. The new design focused on rejuvenating these areas through the redesign of existing beds and the creation of additional planting spaces that would strengthen the relationship between the garden, house and surrounds.

A native planting palette, complemented by a small selection of hardy exotic species, was carefully chosen to create spaces for relaxation, enjoyment and connection with nature. Due to the significance of the established trees, soil cultivation and disturbance were kept to a minimum to protect existing root systems and preserve the character of the landscape. Plant selection was guided by the site's existing soil conditions, mature tree canopy and microclimate, ensuring long-term resilience and low maintenance outcomes. Particular consideration was also given to the property's rabbit population, with strategies incorporated to minimise browsing pressure on newly established plants.

Working closely with the clients throughout the process, we developed a planting palette that reflected their preferences while remaining true to the site's environmental conditions. We sourced and coordinated all plant material and prepared detailed on-site plant layouts to assist the landscape contractors during installation.
The result is a garden that sits comfortably within its setting, an understated, enduring and low maintenance landscape that celebrates the beauty of life among the eucalypts.
