Botanical Traditions - Footscray IELC and learning Precinct
This project had multiple constraints. The grade across the site was significant, it was a multilevel centre and the trees and adjacent buildings had Heritage listing. The IELC was built in partnership with Maribyrnong City Council and the Victorian School Building Authority, and was the first step in forming the new Footscray Learning Precinct. The project included rooms for 3 and 5 year-old kindergarten programs, long day care and Maternal and Child Health services across a two-storey building. In 2021 we commenced the design for the adjacent site, which included the redevelopment of areas of Footscray City Primary School.
The Footscray Integrated Early Learning centre project was modelled in 3D which assisted the multiple stake holders visualise the project, especially how the fall across the site would be treated. During the final stages of the project, the landscape underwent cost management at not all items got constructed as initially designed. However, the playspace at ground level and also the rooftop provides many play opportunities. The level could not be built up due to the Existing trees on the neighbouring site. The design included sandpits, softfall areas, wicking garden beds, water play and extensive planted areas.
